The Cost of Gastric Bypass Surgery

The cost of gastric bypass surgery is very expensive, and almost unaffordable by most people. It not only includes the surgery itself, but the preparation of getting a patient ready for surgery through exams and psychological consultations, as well as the hospital stay and after care. The price ranges from $20,000 to $35,000 depending on the surgeon you choose. Most health insurance companies are starting to see gastric bypass surgery as a necessity and not just as an elective surgery, so some are starting to cover it under their insurance. However, it is a surgery that you need to prove you need, and this is becoming the problem with some insurance companies. You need to be qualified for this surgery before getting it, and you will have to have demonstrated a serious effort in the past to control your weight issues. According to some insurance companies you will have had to be obese for at least 5 years previous to the surgery and must be at least 100 pounds overweight. The cost of the surgery itself is not the only thing to consider. You must also factor in the cost for material items such as new clothes that will need to be replaced every few months, exercise equipment, and a general new lifestyle. So, even when the surgery ends, your out of pocket expense may not. This isn’t even including the psychological and emotional costs of gastric bypass surgery. You will no longer be able to eat certain foods, or eat in certain restaurants. Your entire life will be different because of the aftereffects of eating high fat or high sugar foods. You may have to have constant doctor care if you experience vomiting and purging of the food that you eat, if you do not properly care for yourself after the surgery. Before you consider this surgery, you need to take into account everything that is involved, not just the actual price.
