The zone diet uses a system of eating fats, carbohydrates and protiens in a certain ratio to keep insulin production under control. The Zone ratio is 40% Carbs, 30% Protein, and 30% Fat. The zone diet also encourages dieters to control portions and not eat a portion over 500 calories.

This diet is not only good for controlling insulin production and weight gain. It is also a very healthy diet that can reduce occurence of cardiovascular disease and high blood pressure. This is especially a good diet if you have a risk of type 2 diabetes because it works really well at controlling insulin production. Type 2 diabetes occurs when the body gets desensitized to insulin because of overproduction due to a high sugar diet and decreased exercise.

The zone diet was created by Barry Sears. In his book “The Zone” he claims that when a proper ratio of fat and carbohydrates is achieved the body produces a chemical called Eicosanoids. The eicosanoids are anti-inflammitory and trigger stored fat to be used as energy. The accuracy of this claim is often debated, but dieters around the world swear by the zone diet.

In Barry Sears book, he also states the importance of adding fatty acids to the diet. He states that for the body to properly burn fat, there must be a correct ratio of omega-3 and omerga-6 fatty acids. These fatty acids are also essential for controlling the release of insulin for proper fat burning.
