Weight Loss Surgery Options
Trying to lose weight is not a new concept, but how people go about it is changing dramatically. Up until fairly recently there was only one way to lose weight, through healthy eating and exercise. Now people are finding that they aren’t losing the weight as quickly or as efficiently through diet and exercise, so they are looking for other options.
Weight loss surgery is becoming increasingly popular among people who have a great deal of weight to lose, usually over 100 pounds for men, and 80 pounds for women. Obesity is one of the leading causes of death in the world and has contributed to numerous other health problems that are killing thousands of people. Now, people have the option of choosing between two weight loss surgeries that will help them become not only thinner, but healthier.
The first option that is available to most people is:
- Gastric Bypass Surgery or Stomach Stapling – Quite simply this is when they staple a small section of your stomach together so that you feel less hungry and absorb less calories then if you had the use of your entire stomach. You are essentially bypassing most of your stomach so that you feel fuller after eating and you are able to eat a lot less food. It prevents overeating forcing you to lose weight without being hungry.
The second option available is:
- The Adjustable Gastric Banding System – This is a fairly recent addition to weight loss surgery in which your doctor will insert a band in the stomach to limit consumption of food and also gives you a fuller feeling without being hungry. The band is implanted through a less invasive procedure than gastric bypass surgery and is also reversible if you need it to be later in life. Saline is injected into the band to cater the size to the individual so that it can be adjusted and versatile according to their dietary needs.
Whichever option you choose should be researched thoroughly so that you can be fully aware of the risks and benefits of each weight loss surgery.
